Brushing and Flossing every day helps keep your teeth and gums healthy.  Having clean teeth also makes you look and feel better about yourself.  Your breath is fresher.  Your smile is brighter, and your teeth feel smooth.

Many kinds of bacteria live in the mouth.  They collect on the teeth, gums and tongue.  Bacteria quickly forms a sticky film called plaque.  Plaque is the major cause of tooth decay and gum disease.  Plaque is always forming and needs to be removed every day.  Brushing removes plaque from the tooth's surface and around the gumline.  Flossing breaks up plaque between the teeth and under the gums.

Brushing and flossing removes food particles and helps prevent the buildup of plaque bacteria on and around your teeth. If left undisturbed, the bacteria would accumulate, and harden into a thick shell called Tartar or Calculus.  Eventually, this increase in bacteria will cause tooth decay and bone loss from Periodontal Disease.

Tips for maintaining your oral health

  • Brush twice daily with fluoridated toothpaste
  • Brush for two minutes each time 
  • Floss at least once a day.  It is best to floss before you brush.
  • Rinse with Listerine® to kill bacterial plaque.
  • Rinse with ACT Restore® before bedtime to strengthen teeth. 
  • Limit snacking in between meals.
  • Minimize the amount of processed sugars you consume.
  • Drink water throughout the day to neutralize acids.
  • Chew sugarless gum to increase salivary flow.

How to Brush

    Brushing Your Teeth
    Proper brushing should take two to three minutes. 
  • Only use a soft or ultra-soft toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. 
  • Start at one corner of the mouth and slowly work your way around.
  • Hold the brush at a 45 degree angle to the gumline. 
  • Gently brush the smile side of the teeth using a circular motion.  Do not scrub or use aggressive pressure.
  • Brush the tongue side of the back teeth using the same circular motion.
  • Turn the brush and use the tip to clean the inner tongue side of the upper and lower front teeth.
  • Make sure you feel the brush against the gum line.
  • Clean the chewing surface using a scrubbing motion
  • Brush your tongue as far back as possible.
  • Rinse several times during the brushing process.
  • Change your toothbrush every 3 months or when the head becomes flared.
  • Electronic toothbrushes also require new heads every 3 months.

 

How to Floss

    Flossing Techniques
    Floss at least once a day to remove plaque between teeth and below the gums.
  • It is best to Floss before you Brush, so the toothbrush can finish removing the plaque from the area.
  • Start at one corner of the mouth and work your way around.
  • Wrap 18 inches of Floss around your middle fingers.  Secure it with your index fingers and thumbs.
  • Ease the Floss between your teeth.  Do not SAW in a downward motion.
  • Wrap the Floss around one side of the tooth, forming a C-shape.
  • Gently work the Floss up and down, going below the gum line.
  • Bring the Floss against the adjacent tooth, forming a C-shape.
  • Again, Gently work the Floss up and down, going below the gum line.
  • Move to the next contact spot.
  • Do not forget to Floss behind the last tooth in each corner of the mouth.
  • If you have a Bridge or Orthodontics, use a Floss Threader to get the floss under the Bridge or Wire.
